La Paz to Loreto
We have been back onboard the Independence for over a month with most of that time spent in La Paz. We had some issues with our bottom paint so back to the yard we went. With those issues solved, we splashed back in and said adios to Costabaja Marina. Currently, there is quite a brisk north wind ripping through the southern end of Baja, so Larry has been back at weather watch finding us protected anchorages for the next week. Our first stop is Ensenada el Galo (8NM), where we stay anchored for four days. It is a beautiful spot off of Espiritu Santo Island, just a few miles north of the Marina Costabaja. We are able to get the tender in the water and take a run to shore to explore and then around to some of the other nearby coves and bays. Our next stop was an overnight in San Evaristo (31NM) and then a few days in Puento Los Gatos (27NM) with its amazing red sandstone rock formations. From there we spent three days at Bahia Agua Verdi (22NM). This anchorage is very popular and fills up quickly. Our first night was pretty rolly as we could not get into the inner bay and the swells kept us rocking all night. As the next morning unfolded and boats departed, we were able to get a prime spot in the inner bay. The weather cooperated allowing us to kayak to shore so we could explore a bit of the area, including the internet cafe. But, the calm weather is hard to hold onto and the wind is forecast to blow again, so we depart early the next day and head to Loreto. It is a short run (23NM) and we are able to pull into Puerto Escondido Marina a day early. We took a peak at Loreto today and can’t believe how this sweet town has grown. It has been sixteen years since we were last here and the streets are all paved and there are large hotels along the malecon. The town still has its charm but certainly feels more established. The locals are happy with the growth and tourism is doing well, bringing good changes to the area. We look forward to more exploration in and around Loreto.
